Radiology Technician Education

A career as a Radiology Technician is very lucrative and has a scope of long-term earning opportunity. Radiology Technician Education and the experience in this field can be obtained from different hospitals, universities and colleges, and from vocational-technical institutions.

Courses of Radiology Technician Education vary from 12 months to 4 year that leads the student to acquire a certificate, bachelor’s degree, or associate degree. The short-term certificate courses for one year are for those who are already in the profession and wish to specialize in CT or MRI. A Bachelor’s or a master degree will make you eligible for the post of administrator, supervisor, teacher etc.

Educational requirement for the Program

High school diploma or similar to that is required for the entry-level eligibility for the radiology technician course. Some of the schools and colleges may look for the performance and the score at the college entrance exams. They may also ask to produce work experience certificate.

The Course

The students have to have a through perception in physics, biology, mathematics, and chemistry. The students of the radiologic technician education have to undergo both the theoretical class and supervised or practical clinical experience. A typical course pattern of a radiology technician program includes

• Both theoretical and particle knowledge in physiology and anatomy.
• Patients care protocol
• Placing the patient in the correct posture.
• Pathology and radiology
• Principles of radiation protection and safety norms
• Radiation physics
• Medical ethics
• Imaging and radiology principles
• Medical terminology.

The Online Courses

Many programs offer online radiology technician education. However, before enrolling you must verify whether Joint Review Committee on Education of Radiologic Technology or JRCERT accredits the course. In addition, the distance-learning school should be nationally or regionally recognized and accredited. The online institutions are attached with the local healthcare organization to provide the supervised or practical clinical experience.

Certification and Licensing

After completion of the course, the students have to sit for the American Registry of Radiology Technology or ARRT exam for their certification or graduation. The certification from ARRT is considered as a gold standard in USA. However, in some states there is a “limited scope” practice for the radiographers. In this case, the students are allowed to focus on the classes to study specific parts of the body. After completion of this study, the students have to appear for the ARRT exam.

The radiologic technicians who are ARRT pass out are required to re-certify themselves in every two years. Before re-certification, the technicians are required to complete a one-day continuing education program. A failure to complete this education may result in re-appearing for the ARRT board exam for credentialed.

Evaluation of the education program:

Before enrolling for any radiology technician education, it is necessary to evaluate the program. The criteria in which you should evaluate the course are

• Is the course focused towards providing practical as well as theoretical experience so that you can clear the ARRT exam?

• Do the institutions and the courses accredited by the JRCERT?

• Can the students enjoy the financial aids like scholarship, loans, and grants

• The performance of the students in previous years.
